Recently, the City of Boston announced a new streamlined application process to make it easier for residents to host Halloween block parties to ensure that children and their families can safely trick or treat. By closing neighborhood side streets to vehicle traffic during trick or treating, community members can create a celebratory and safe environment for kids to enjoy the holiday. The Boston Transportation Department (BTD) has streamlined the play street application process to make it easier to host a block party and to ensure applications are considered and approved swiftly. Check out the Roxbury Sunflower Project
Did you know you can find fields of sunflowers right here in Boston? There a beautiful lot of them in Grove Hall near Blue Hill Ave. and Warren Street. You can find them at Martin’s Park in the Seaport, in Dewey Square on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, and between India Street and High Street on the Greenway. These beautiful fields are part of The Roxbury Sunflower Project, a community-wide, collaborative initiative by artist Ekua Holmes that aims to bring nature, beauty, and color to Roxbury in unloved and un-cared for lots or in private gardens and yards by inviting families, organizations, and agencies to plant 20,000 sunflowers in the Roxbury neighborhood in the summer of 2018.
Free Bluebikes for World Mental Health Day
In recognition of World Mental Health Day (Tuesday, October 10), Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) is sponsoring FREE Bluebikes Adventure Passes to honor the importance of this day and provide an opportunity for members of the Metro Boston community to get outside and enjoy the many health benefits of outdoor exercise. Dorchester Open Studios – Explore Art in the Neighborhood
The fall neighborhood-wide Dorchester Open Studios will take place Saturday and Sunday, October 21 and 22, from 11am to 5pm. Humphreys Street Studios (HSS), now majority artist-owned/operated, will anchor the event, located at 11-13 Humphreys Street in Uphams Corner, Dorchester. Visiting Open Studios is a wonderful way to meet neighborhood artists, learn about their craft, and see their work practices behind the scenes. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions, learn how art is made, and even purchase original work directly from the artists on site. At Humphreys Street Studios, visitors will meet painters, sculptors, jewelry-makers, print-makers, graphic designers, photographers, woodworkers, blacksmiths, and more.
