Meet Biab, the new nail trend popular with celebs like Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian

If you keep a keen eye on the latest beauty trends, you’ve likely noticed that Biab nails are having a major moment. Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Dua Lipa and Kim Kardashian have been flaunting this new nail obsession all over Instagram, while the #biab tag has racked up over 480 million views on TikTok, per Glamour. But what exactly are Biab nails, and why are they becoming the go-to choice for A-listers?

Here’s the TL:DR breakdown: this revolutionary nail enhancement is transforming the way we think about manicures. Biab is a hybrid between gel and acrylic nails, providing the strength and flexibility of acrylics with the longevity and ease of gel. It’s essentially a brush-on gel that can also be used to sculpt and extend nails, creating a durable yet natural-looking finish. The Biab formula was created by UK-based The GelBottle Inc.

What are Biab nails?

Professional manicurist and international nail educator Fran Méndez explains that Biab is an acronym for “builder in a bottle”. “It’s a product where the gel comes in a ‘polish bottle’ format. Basically, it’s used for services like enhancements, gel baths, and capping on the natural length of the nail, or also what’s sometimes called a ‘micro extension’, which is a very short extension of the nail.”

Biab was originally created to offer a solution for those seeking strong, durable nails without the hassle and damage often associated with acrylics. It’s designed to promote natural nail growth, offering a protective layer that strengthens and enhances the nails.

How is Biab applied?

The application process is straightforward but requires precision. It starts with clean, dry nails created by filing, buffing the nail surface, pushing back cuticles, and cleaning the nails with acetone. A base coat is then applied to prep the nail before the Biab product is applied in a thick bead and spread across the nail. Once all nails are coloured, they’re cured under a UV or LED lamp to set the product.

Multiple layers of the Biab product can be applied to build thickness and shape. Finally, nails are shaped and refined with a file and buffer, before a top coat is applied and cured for a glossy, long-lasting finish. Biab nails typically last up to three weeks without chipping or lifting. Just be aware that Biab manicures often take a little longer than regular gels.

Biab vs Shellac, gels and acrylics

When it comes to nail enhancements, not all products are created equal. Shellac is great for that high-shine, glossy look, but it doesn’t have much durability. And while acrylics are useful for creating long, dramatic nails, the application process is long and tricky – and involves mixing a liquid with a powder to create the hard structure that acts as an extension to the natural nail. Biab is a thicker gel formulation but provides the same strength and durability as Shellac and acrylics, without the harshness. You get to build and reinforce your nails while keeping them healthy and happy. However, unlike acrylics, Biab is not recommended for creating nail extensions.

As Mendez notes, which nails to choose depends on what you’re looking for. “I think that, more than a benefit of one over the other, it depends on the result that the client is looking for. If what you want is to grow your natural nail or keep it without damage, then Biab is ideal. But if you’re looking for a longer nail immediately, a soft gel or acrylic is going to be a better material for that.”

Biab at home

For best results, you’ll want to get your Biab nails done at a salon. This is because the thick gel formulation and curing requirement can be tricky. But, if you have the skills and equipment – specifically, a UV or LED lap, a few Biab polishes, and basic nail prep tools – then technically, you can give yourself a Biab manicure in the comfort of your own home.

This at-home flexibility is perfect for those with busy schedules or anyone looking to save on regular salon visits. Plus, the long-lasting nature of Biab means fewer touch-ups and more time enjoying your beautiful, durable nails.
