Megan Thee Stallion and Kendrick Lamar Lead 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards Nominations

Megan Thee Stallion leads the pack with a dominant 12 nominations at the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards. In a groundbreaking shift, for the first time since the “hip-hop artist of the year” category was introduced in 2020, women have achieved equal representation with men. The nominees this year feature a balanced field, with Megan, Cardi B, GloRilla, and Nicki Minaj going toe-to-toe with 21 Savage, Drake, Future, and Kendrick Lamar.

Kendrick Lamar closely follows Megan with 11 nominations, while Drake, a perennial contender, secured eight. Cardi B, GloRilla, Metro Boomin, and Minaj each earned seven nominations, with Future and Travis Scott receiving six apiece. Other notable nominees include 21 Savage and 41, who landed four nods each, and A$AP Rocky, Common, Lil Wayne, Pete Rock and rising star Sexyy Red, each scoring three.

Drake remains a fixture in the “hip-hop artist of the year” category, earning a nomination for the fifth consecutive year—an unmatched record. Megan picks up her fourth nod in the same category, with Cardi B, Future, and Lamar collecting their third, 21 Savage his second, and, somewhat surprisingly, Nicki Minaj earning her first nomination.

Megan’s presence is particularly felt in the best collaboration category, where she racked up three nods for her contributions to Cardi B’s “Bongos,” GloRilla’s “Wanna Be,” and her own chart-topping hit “Mamushi,” featuring Yuki Chiba.

Returning for his third year as host and co-executive producer, Fat Joe will once again helm the show, which is set to tape in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Oct. 8, and air a week later on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on BET. This will make Fat Joe the second-most frequent host in the show’s history, trailing only Mike Epps, who holds the record with four consecutive years (2009-12). Snoop Dogg previously hosted three times from 2013 to 2015, tying Joe’s current run.

“This year’s nominees are a testament to the creativity and diversity that define both hip-hop and its ever-evolving culture,” Connie Orlando, EVP of specials, music programming and music strategy at BET, said in a statement.

Orlando will oversee the production of the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards, serving as executive producer alongside Jamal Noisette, BET’s SVP of specials and music programming. Jesse Collins, CEO of Jesse Collins Entertainment, will return as an executive producer, with Jeannae Rouzan-Clay and Dionne Harmon from Jesse Collins Entertainment also joining the executive production team.

Notably, Collins and Harmon took home Primetime Emmys for their work on the Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show, which featured a star-studded lineup of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and 50 Cent, and won the award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live).

This year’s show marks only the fourth time the BET Hip Hop Awards have been held outside of Atlanta since their inception in 2006. The event shifted to Miami in 2017 and 2018 and was produced from multiple locations during the pandemic in 2020.

Fans can weigh in on key categories, with voting for DJ of the year, producer of the year, and best hip-hop platform opening Friday, Sept. 20, at noon ET on BET.com.
