Another week, another food-inspired trend taking over our feeds. First, the social media powers that be declared the season “tomato girl summer.” Cue bucolic scenes of women in red and white gingham dresses traipsing along the Italian countryside with a straw bag full of the day’s farmers’ market bounty. Then, suddenly, it was all about “latte makeup,” a monochromatic look consisting of brown and caramel tones warming up lids, eyes and cheeks. While the phrase was originally coined in 2018 by content creator Rachel Rigler, Hailey Bieber’s use of it on Instagram last month certainly helped propel it to full-blown phenomenon status.
Bieber, of course, is no stranger to culinary-inspired beauty. The model has even built an entire (and very successful) skincare line around her famed “glazed donut” aesthetic. (Think: Skin so dewy it rivals the sheen on a pillowy Krispy Kreme.) And what goes better with a glazed donut than a latte, right?
Well now it seems Bieber has moved onto another food item. She’s been sporting it on her nails and phone case (see the image at the very top) and most significantly, her face. It all started when Bieber posted a carousel on Instagram captioned “strawberry girl summer.” The photos included close-ups of her face bedecked with flushed cheeks and a smattering of freckles.
Cute and fresh, it is a summer look if we’ve ever seen one. Just the thing to rock during these last sweet weeks of sunshine. And as it turns out, it’s super easy to recreate. Bieber shared the secrets behind her “everyday strawberry makeup” in a TikTok tutorial, prompting legions of other creators to try it out for themselves.
In the video, Bieber kicks things off with the Glazing Milk and Peptide Glazing Fluid from her line, Rhode, to prep her skin. Next comes a little brow gel applied in an upward motion for a bushy effect. She then buffs on a cream bronzer from Tom Ford in the hollows of her cheeks and along her hairline. (For a more affordable option, we recommend Tower 28’s Sculptino Soft Matte Cream Contour + Bronzer, which Bieber told The Kit she was a fan of back in March.) She follows that up with a bit of concealer under the eyes, around the nose, on the chin, in the middle of the forehead and just under the bronzer.
Then begins the “strawberry” portion of the look. Bieber tops her cheeks with two cream blushes, one on the pinkier side and another in the red family. “Can’t say where the cream blushes are from—wink, wink,” Bieber teases, hinting at an imminent Rhode makeup launch. In the meantime, we suggest trying Milk Makeup’s Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick in Flip, the perfect shade of coral red.
She then taps her cheekbones with a peachy-toned highlighter (try Westman Atelier’s Lit Up in Nectar, a beautifully iridescent formula that’s not at all sparkly) and defines her eye crease with more of that Tom Ford bronzer.
It’s then time for the all-important freckles à la Strawberry Shortcake. Bieber focuses the dots on the bridge of her nose, just like the cartoon character. The pen she uses is from a UK brand sadly not sold in Canada, but Freck Beauty’s The Original Freckle will achieve the very same look.
Moving on to the eyes, Bieber draws on “a tiny little wing” with what looks to be a chocolate brown liquid liner, a great trick for elongating the eyes in a softer way than traditional black. (Stila’s much raved about Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Dark Brown in a great option.) She then curls her lashes and coats them with mascara.
Last but not least come lips. The beauty founder shapes her pout with a Make Up For Ever lip liner. She’s shared her love for the brand’s Anywhere Caffeine shade in the past so it’s safe to assume that’s the one she’s wielding in the clip.
She then tints her lips with the same cream blush she used on her cheeks and adds the finishing touch with a swipe of her viral Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment. (The ultra-glossy nourishing lip balm was actually one of our Beauty Disrupter Award winners this year). The tube appears to be a yet-to-be-released flavour of the product—strawberry perhaps? It does bear red lettering. (In the meantime, reach for the vanilla version, a once limited-edition launch that recently earned a permanent spot in the PLT lineup.)
Maybe this whole “strawberry girl” trend is a genius marketing move designed to build buzz around Rhode’s upcoming lip treatment flavour? In any case, Bieber’s newfound love of all things red cannot be denied. Just yesterday she debuted fiery auburn locks (which looked smashing with her red-toned cheeks and freckles). Unsurprisingly, she and her colourist Matt Rez chose to give the hue a food-inspired moniker. Get ready to see “cinnamon cookie butter” hair all over your feed.
