Photos: SLAM celebrates 50 years of hip-hop with exhibit connecting music to culture

Camouflage #105, durags, acrylic on wood panel, by Anthony Olubunmi Akinbola, from Columbia, Mo., is photographed on display on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, at the The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century exhibit at the St. Louis Art Museum as special guest take a tour. Akinbola cut stretched stitched and collaged head scarfs made to protect African American hair and became a fashion statement associated with hip hop culture. The Culture Aug. 19th with a Hip Hop block party outside the museum and runs through January 1st.
