I Ditched My Almond Nails For This Trendy Shape—Here’s Why

I’ve always considered myself a manicure enthusiast. From hopping on collaboration launches to sporting trendy finishes like matte topcoats and glazed donut nails, I like to change up my look and do so often. However, when it came to trying new nail shapes, I wasn’t so experimental. I’ve always stuck to two shapes: either almond or oval. I found that both offered a natural, softened look, regardless of whether I was sporting extensions or my natural nails. But I recently had an epiphany. While casually scrolling through Instagram, I came across a short coffin manicure that completely stopped me in my tracks.

The look was simple—a candy apple red polish splashed on coffin extensions with a modest short length. But simplicity aside, it was also commanding and elegant. I’d always considered the coffin and stilletto shapes most ideal for extra-long lengths and maximalist nail art. But it turns out a shorter length can be striking. Below, see the benefits of short coffin nails and the best looks to try right now.

Short coffin nail benefits

If you’ve clung to almond nails for their ability to make any design feel sophisticated and clean, I’ve got news for you: Short coffin nails deliver that same energy. Similar to almond shapes, coffin nails feature a wide base and tapered sides that have a slimming look. The effect gives both shapes an elegant and feminine feel, regardless of what design or color you choose.

As for the shorter length, there are more than a few benefits, starting with form and function. Medium and long nails often require an adjustment period, whether it’s for typing, texting or taking out your contacts. With short coffin nails, there is little to no learning curve. So, you can walk out of the salon confident that your daily routine isn’t about to change just because your nails are done.

But the biggest benefit for me has been the squared-off tip. Short almond nails tend to look a bit stunted due to the pointed tip. But a square, flattened tip keeps the nail looking long and chic.
