Doechii delivers a standout performance of “Boiled Peanuts” and “Denial is a River” on Wednesday’s episode (Dec. 4) of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
Styled in Gucci and adidas, the Florida-bred musician and her two background dancers are intertwined through waist-length braids, moving in sync with both tracks. With performative facial expressions, choreography, and a custom set, the 26-year-old brings the two songs from her 2024 acclaimed mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal to the silver screen.
“This one is for Hip Hop,” wrote the Top Dawg Entertainment rapper on X Thursday morning (Dec. 5) sharing the performance clip. She continued to lay out her inspirations and show gratitude for the platform.
“I felt heavily inspired by the lineage of Hip Hop and how it contributes to who I am today. This is my first self choreographed performance and one of the most important things I wanted to highlight was my connection to black women through Hip Hop. With the help of hair artist Malcom Marquez, we were able to make this symbolic art performance come to life in just a short week,” she continued.
“This is my take on the future of Hip Hop. This is blackness. This is luxury. This is history.”
Alligator Bites Never Heal was released on Aug. 30, 2024, after Doechii launched her weekly Swamp Sessions. Following the drop, she earned multiple nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album.
“Everything is where it’s supposed to be,” shared the “Alter Ego” performer with The Forty-Five last month.
“Now that I’ve had time to settle with [the mixtape] and fans have had time to settle with it, I feel very aligned, just like I’m 100% walking in my purpose. My music and everything else just aligns with exactly who I am and where I am right now, which feels like a lesson,” she continued. “So in a way, that kind of makes life feel a little easy. It feels like I’m on a cloud.”
