Catching up with Rob Vickers is quite a challenge at this time of year, but I finally cornered him over a hurried lunch in Clontarf. Why Clontarf? Because that was where the Olympia pantomime crew were, in intense rehearsal for their seasonal presentation Freezin’. If Rob was worried at the prospect of being booed and hissed at by hundreds upon hundreds of theatre goers over the coming weeks, then the Wicklow town native showed no signs of it. He has been playing the baddie in panto each Christmas for the past decade and always comes up laughing.
He reckons that a true pantomime villain approaches the role with a large dollop of humour. His current part, portraying the conniving Hans, will not give the audience packing the venerable Dublin venue from December 20 too many nightmares.
