Separately, Gardai have smashed a major drug distribution network in the capital linked to ‘The Family’ crime gang.

The mob’s criminal enterprise is now in ruin after officers from the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau seized €3.36m worth of cannabis last week.

The stash was seized in the back of a van after it was stopped in the Lucan area.

The two men arrested are both from west Dublin, with one of them having historical links to the Kinahan cartel.

Investigators suspect they were working for ‘The Family’ and were swamping the west and south Dublin area with drugs.

One source said: “These individuals were working directly for ‘The Family’ in south and west Dublin.

“They were running a very significant drug smuggling operation for some time.

“The seizure means that the criminal operation has been completely disrupted.”

Gardai confirmed two men had been arrested.

‘ONGOING INVESTIGATIONS’

A spokesman said: “In the course of ongoing investigations targeting persons suspected to be involved in organised crime, personnel attached to the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau intercepted a vehicle.

“The search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of suspected cannabis herb with an estimated street value of €3.36.

“Two men were arrested and are currently detained.”

Elsewhere, another gigantic drugs haul earlier this year saw gardai impound a boat which they believe is connected to a massive drugs haul seized off the coast of Donegal.

Two large bales of drugs were discovered at Dunfanaghy and Fanad worth an estimated €2.8 million.

The two finds which were wrapped in black plastic and held together with ropes.
