EBay unveils consignment service for designer bags

EBay is launching a new consignment service pairing users selling luxury items with experts who will list and sell their items on their behalf.

The service will initially be available for designer handbags, but the e-commerce company will roll it out next year to further luxury categories, including jewelry and watches.

Eligible new and used bags come from brands such as Chanel, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Saint Laurent. After filling out and submitting a form, the seller receives a prepaid, insured shipping label to dispatch the item, with all shipments being insured throughout the shipping process.

The consignment partner then takes charge of the sale process from photography to pricing and listing, in return for a percentage of the proceeds, dependent on the sale price of the item.

The company says eligible items listed for $500 or more will display the EBay Authenticity Guarantee checkmark, and will go through EBay’s authentication process once they are purchased.

“Our top priority is to respond to the ever-evolving needs of our customers, and continuously delight luxury shoppers and sellers,” said Tirath Kamdar, global GM of luxury at EBay.

“Launching a consignment service builds on the momentum of offerings like Authenticity Guarantee and Certified By Brand, giving our customers more trusted ways to buy and sell on the marketplace.”

EBay is partnering with Linda Lightman, founder of Linda’s Stuff, who has operated a consignment store on EBay for more than 20 years, for the lanch.

The e-commerce giant has been upping its fashion game lately, with recent moves including the expansion of its Authenticity Guarantee service to new and secondhand streetwear, the acquisition of AI-powered authentication provider Certilogo, and the launch of Certified by Brand.

“With the addition of consignment, EBay is further cementing itself as a trusted destination for luxury and fashion,” said the company.
