POETRY CLASS: At the Troy Public Library, 100 Second Street, 11am. Join the library and local poet & author Susan Comninos for a poetry reading & writing class at the Main branch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This class will explore the creation of a speaker who’s virtuous, un-self-blaming, special — and also, not quite real. Beginning poets, especially, like to create this kind of “I” for their poems: a fantasy self that, given its outsized power or goodness, reads as one-dimensional. So what happens to the tone of a poem when we deliberately play up the flawlessness of the “I,” to the point of absurdity? The answer can be comedy, insanity, or self-irony: all of which can serve a poem in interesting ways, all of which will be explored in this class. Registration is required. DINING WITH DIABETES: An online series by Cornell Cooperative Extension Albany County. Adults with type 2 diabetes (or those who are at risk of type 2 diabetes) and their family members, caregivers, and support persons are invited to participate. This free virtual program will help you learn the skills needed to promote good health while living with diabetes. Participants will learn how to read the new food labels, count carbohydrates and plan meals using the Plate Method. There will also be time to discuss ways to stay motivated to eat healthy and stay active during the holidays.This class offers opportunities to connect with others who are dealing with diabetes. Healthy recipes, cooking techniques and even ideas for making healthier choices at restaurants and grocery stores will be shared with the group. This workshop will teach you the basics of one and two-point perspective drawing that will improve your drawing skills in one session. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. CROP ASSESSMENT: The Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Capital Area Agriculture & Horticulture Program are pleased to present “Small Grain Production Field Meeting – Pre-Winter Crop Assessment” at Kinderhook Creek Farm, 5168 South Stephentown Rd, Stephentown, from 1-3pm. Farmers will learn how to assess their winter grain establishment before winter sets in. They can also earn two Pesticide Applicator Recertification Credits. Come dressed for the weather as we assess crop growth in the field and survey weeds and do an in-field soil health assessment. Herbicide options for small grains will be reviewed. BOOK FESTIVAL: The Woman’s Club of Albany and the Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza will host the 18th annual “Good Books for Good Works” from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Book House in Stuyvesant Plaza. The event supports Capital Region urban and rural school libraries by raising funds for new books. A percentage of sales during the evening will be donated to the library of the Delaware Community School of the City School District of Albany.

SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. The Troy Atrium is located in downtown Troy with entrances on Fulton Street, 3rd Street, Broadway and 4th Street. Free parking is available in the City’s 5th Street Parking Garage, Riverfront Park, the Green Island Bridge lots and on city streets. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. Residents and community members can call the YWCA-GCR at (518) 274-7100 to find out Tuesday’s menu. More information about this program is available online at www.ywca-gcr.org.
COMMUNITY DINNER: Redemption Church of Christ serves a free dinner every Tuesday from 4-6 pm at the church, 1511 6th Ave. in Watervliet. All are welcome. A takeout option is available. Delivery is available for those not able to attend in person.

STORYTIME LEARN & PLAY: At the Troy Public Library, 100 Second Street. 10:30-11:15 am. Join us at the Main Library for your child’s enrichment through stories, song, movement, and play! For ages 0 to 5 with a caregiver.
SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. BINGO: Rensselaer Elks Lodge #2073, located at 683 Columbia Turnpike, hosts Bingo every Thursday evening and the general public is welcome to attend. Doors open at 5 PM for players age 18+. Play starts at 7 PM. $1,300 in prizes. Food and refreshments sold.

KNIT & CROCHET GROUP: Join the Troy Public Library for a bi-weekly stitching group from 10 to 11 a.m. on every first and third Friday of the month. Whether you have experience knitting or crocheting or you want to start learning a new skill, this group is for you! Participants will work together to stitch blankets and other needed items to donate to local homeless shelters and outreach groups. Participants are also welcome to work on their own personal projects. Bring your own knitting needles and crochet hooks or use what we have available. This in-person event is free and open to the public. No registration required. The Troy Public Library is located at 100 Second Street, Troy.

INDOOR FARMERS MARKET: The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is held in the Atrium every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from November through April and features most of the 100 vendors from its popular outdoor market. The Troy Atrium is located in downtown Troy with entrances on Fulton Street, 3rd Street, Broadway and 4th Street. Free parking is available in the City’s 5th Street Parking Garage, Riverfront Park, the Green Island Bridge lots and on city streets. No dogs are allowed in the Atrium, with exceptions made for service animals. The indoor market will be expanding to the second floor to include an indoor dining area where customers will be able to eat prepared food from vendors. Holiday market from 11am to 3pm. CONCERT: Capital Community Voices will present “Most Wonderful Time of Year,” a program of classical carols and popular holiday songs on Sunday, December 17th at 3:00 pm at Genet Elementary School, Route 4, East Greenbush. The program will feature classical selections by Haydn, Saint-Saëns, and Schubert. Popular songs will include “Winter Wonderland,” “Home for the Holidays,” “Wonderful Christmastime,” and “The Christmas Song.” The audience will have
an opportunity to sing along with traditional carols. The chorus is directed by Julie Panke and will be accompanied by Benjamin April, piano, Andrea Lubbers, flute, Randy Jennings, bass, and James Iacketta, percussion. Ticket prices for the concert are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors and students, available at the door.
