EastEnders’ Lucy Benjamin reveals major career regret after re-joining BBC soap

LUCY Benjamin has already got her sights set on a new role after leaving EastEnders – but admits she doesn’t expect it to be glamorous.

The Lisa Fowler actress, who returned to the soap this summer two decades after her first appearance, has cast aside the idea of playing a romantic lead on her next project.

Instead, she admits she knows she would be more suited to playing the baddies from now on thanks to her character Lisa’s determination to seek her revenge.

And she’s waved goodbye to any hopes of being portrayed as a sex symbol.

Lucy said: “I was never a sex symbol!

“I’ve never been portrayed as that because Lisa was always downtrodden, always the one that wasn’t terribly glamorous.

“So I kind of dealt with that.

“I don’t think it bothers me, I just think I kind of have to come to terms with that.

“It’s kind of roles that I might get going forward.

“I wouldn’t mind playing a few more glamorous parts, that’s for sure.

“I’m getting away from downtrodden Lisa.

“Now, they obviously see Lisa as a bit of a baddie, so now I’m being cast as baddies which I’d never thought I’d do.

“So forget the sex symbols, bring on the baddies because you can get your teeth into so much stuff and have so much fun with.

“I just think you can have fun playing bad guys and I’ve never really had that before.

“I’d love to play someone that’s seriously messed up in the head, I’d love to play a serial killer.”

But despite her keenness to find new roles, if there’s one
thing for sure for Lucy, it would never be goodbye to Lisa for good.

The star, who is currently filming her new movie Look To
The Light, added: “I do get to go play Lisa, play that character who isn’t particularly glamorous, leave and then do fabulous parts like in Look To The Light.

“I kind of feel like I’ve got the best of both worlds in that respect that I can go back, recuperate Lisa again and then leave and get to do lots of other lovely acting jobs.

“Every time I go back there I have lovely things to do.

“They do write some great stuff for my character.

“She never comes back just asking for a cup of tea and a slice of cake or a gin and tonic.

“It’s always kind of layers to Lisa.

“There’s always issues, there’s always something going on.

“She always comes back to cause trouble.
