The South Sound Music Festival was a big day at Jazzy’s Café on July 23, as people came and went throughout the afternoon and evening to meet up with friends and enjoy a full day of live musical performances, food trucks, a Bikes, Bullies and Cars show, merchandise booths and more. Unfortunately, headliner Juvenile was prevented from being there due to bad weather causing long flight delays, but Festival organizers did not give up on bringing the hip hop legend to Tacoma.
On Sunday, Aug. 20, Juvenile will take the outdoor stage at Jazzy’s Café, 3701 S. Lawrence St., for another run of the South Sound Music Festival from 1-9 p.m. All tickets purchased for the previous Festival will be honored (must show proof of purchase) and everyone else wanting to purchase a ticket can do so at ssmusicfestival.com.
Songwriter, composer and performer Chris Crayzie will be the host, an accomplished music artist who cites the Hilltop vibe as a primary influence on his sound. Check him out at chriscrayzie2.bandcamp.com/music.
Festival lead producers Patrick Hughes, Jr. and DeSean Willis did not want to disappoint the community with the absence of Juvenile in July, so they’re looking forward to bringing him to town this month.
“It’s a big production and I didn’t want to rush it,” Hughes said about how the August date was chosen.
Juvenile shared a video message on the South Sound Music Festival’s Facebook page on the day of the July 23 event apologizing for not being able to be there, and you can see his disappointment as he recorded the video in the airport waiting area.
“I’m trying to find a connection, but all the seats are taken. I hate for this to happen, especially for my fans,” he says. “I’m sorry but I don’t think I’m going to be able to make it. I wish I was there.”
But now Juvenile is going to be here, which is great news for the Festival now that it’s solid to be brought back as the 3rd Annual South Sound Music Fest next year.
Despite the last-minute changes and shifts to make on the day’s agenda, Hughes is happy with how this year’s Festival went and he’s already brainstorming with the crew for the 2024 South Sound Music Festival.
“I already have an artist in mind for next year. I got a good plan,” Hughes said.
