After Cat-and-mouse Chase, Cook Held With ₹50l Booty | Bengaluru News

BENGALURU: A cook who was on the run after stealing about 502 grams of gold ornaments, 100 grams of diamonds and two-and-a-half kg of silver articles, Rs 1.2 lakh cash and US $6,000 from his employer’s residence has been arrested.
The accused, Surendra Kumar Kamat, 27, from Madhubani in Bihar, had been working in the house of Amith Jain in Doddenekkundi, east Bengaluru, for the last four years and stayed in the same house.
Amith is a private firm employee. He and his family had gone to Mumbai on April 12 asking Kamat to look after the house until they return on April 14. Kamat had access to all the rooms in the house.
Amit’s wife, Rajni Jain, in her complaint to Mahadevapura police, stated that when they called Kamat on April 14 from Mumbai, his phone was switched off.
Sensing something amiss, they asked a friend to check their house. When the friend visited their residence, the theft came to light.
The family returned to the city and upon checking CCTV footage, they found that Kamat got into a cab with four bags on April 12 and left the house. Rajni told police Kamat fled with valuables and dollars worth Rs 50 lakh, police said.
A team headed by inspector G Praveen Babu and sub-inspector Sunil Chandrashekar Kaddi rushed to Bihar to catch Kamat. However, he got to know cops were on his trail and he left for Vijayawada to evade arrest. However, Kaddi and his team spotted and nabbed Kamat at Vijayawada railway station on April 20. Police recovered all valuables, Rs 12,000 cash and the dollars. Kamat told cops that he spent rest of the cash.
Kamat gained trust of the family and had access to keys of the house. Using the keys, Kamat opened the locker and made away with the booty, a senior police officer said.
Wife scolded for not
earning enough money
Kamat said his wife who stays in Bihar had scolded him for not earning enough despite being in Bengaluru. He requested his employer to increase his salary but they didn’t consider it. He wanted to become rich overnight by stealing the ornaments, said the police officer.
