Bumrah leads India’s fightback
Jasprit Bumrah’s triple strike left Australia gasping as they lost Nathan McSweeney, Usmana Khawaja and Steve Smith in no time. Bumrah led India’s fightback as Day 1 witnessed 17 wickets falling, the most that have fallen on a single day in Australia.
All 17 wickets fell to seamers on a lively Perth Stadium pitch that offered movement from start. The ball swung both ways, and the pitch only seemed to quicken as the day progressed. India, after opting to bat first, were bowled out for 150, with Josh Hazlewood leading the charge with a four-wicket haul. India managed to reach the total due to a counterattacking 48-run partnership between Rishabh Pant and debutant Nitish Reddy for the seventh wicket.
In response, Jasprit Bumrah came out firing. Even after his spell, the Australian batters couldn’t breathe easy, as Harshit Rana and Mohammed Siraj continued to exploit the conditions to great effect. Despite being bowled out for just 150, India somehow finished the day on top, with their seamers making an impression in conditions that clearly suited them.
