The clichés of casual 2000s Hollywood style, from Juicy Couture sweatsuits to Uggs to yoga pants, are often held up as examples of the downfall of fashion, if not civilization. But at his Los Angeles fashion show on Saturday, Balenciaga creative director Demna asked the question: What if everything we thought was bad about L.A. style was actually good?
Demna, who goes by a mononym, is just as interested in the underbelly of Los Angeles style as the glamour of the red carpet. On a tony Hancock Park street lined by palm trees, he showed looks that ran the gamut from smutty paparazzi-ready street style to elegant red-carpet gowns. Black workout gear and low-rise velour sweatsuits paraded next to suits and sculptural couture dresses inspired by the house’s founder, Cristóbal Balenciaga.
