Coco Chanel once bleated on about how classy women remove one accessory before leaving the house – as a million hun-tastic Dunelm-procured quote canvases will attest – but unfortunately, she was wrong. Better to look a bit batshit than boring, and stand out like a sore thumb in the sea of dry, quiet luxury evoking cashmere sweaters and dingy neutral colours that are dominating fashion right now – at least in our opinion.
Someone who agrees with that sentiment is Dazed photographer Jamie-Maree Shipton, who’s known for pounding the Paris, Milan, and London pavements with icy white and blue hair, a blend of high-low jewellery – collected between Panconesi and the nearest naff souvenir store – and a pair of bizarro, statement-making shoes from Balenciaga, Abra, or Miu Miu. Even the camera she totes around fashion week has become a signature accoutrement: Shipton uses a pink digital point and shoot once found in the back pages of the Argos catalogue.
It’s maybe for this reason and her own commitment to stacking up interesting bits and pieces to make an outfit her own that Shipton is great at digging out the devil in the details, and while she’s great at capturing standout full looks, her most interesting street style photographs are the ones that zoom in on the accents: whether that’s the fashion editors piling into the Loewe show in stilettos stuck all over with deflated balloons, or the kids hanging outside hoping to spot their fave star in kitschy poodle sneakers, clown make-up, or cartoony bags.
In the gallery above, we’ve collated some of her best shots from the SS24 season. Some looks might make you laugh, some might make you question ‘WTF?’, and some might just go on to inspire your own look. Click through above and below to zoom in on the details yourself.
