AHMEDABAD: Dabhoda police arrested one Chetan Thulkar, 32, a resident of Maharashtra, for burgling a house in Gandhinagar district, where Rs 38 lakh was stolen. Police said they recovered stolen goods worth about Rs 1 crore from Thulkar’s possession.
A theft had been reported from Vidhata Bungalows at Shahpur in Gandhinagar, for which the local crime branch was roped in.Based on CCTV footage and human intelligence, investigators zeroed in on Thulkar, a resident of Jamshedji Tata Road in the Churchgate area of Mumbai.
Investigators went to Mumbai and found that Thulkar had a long criminal record and was originally from Hinganghat in Wardha district. From technical and human intelligence, they learned that Thulkar was in Wardha and arrested him there on Feb 15.
He was produced in a Gandhinagar court and remanded in custody for 10 days. About the Gandhinagar burglary, Thulkar said he first reconnoitered the area, but the boundary wall was too high to jump. He then fashioned a ladder by cutting trees and carried out the burglary. He hid valuables stolen from the house in the Sabarmati river, which police have recovered.
Investigators said they found jewellery worth Rs 83 lakh, Rs 15 lakh in cash and other valuables, worth a total of Rs 99.98 lakh, in Thulkar’s possession. He has 33 cases registered against him in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.
Police said Thulkar would fly in and out of the city where he was going to carry out a burglary and would stay at luxury hotels. They said he spent freely on expensive salons and funded a lavish lifestyle by burgling houses.
