NOV. 17, 2023 (DALLAS) – As part of the Mavs Take ACTION! plan, the Dallas Mavericks produced a session of The HUDDLE with the theme “Cultural Revolution: Reflecting on Hip-Hop History,” focused on celebrating the 50-year history and legacy of hip-hop music. Special guest host Jeff “Skin” Wade moderated a panel discussion with hip-hop experts and pioneers, including rapper and producer The D.O.C., rapper Dorrough, rapper Bobby Sessions, and media personality/DJ Ivy Awino, to discuss the significant influence hip-hop has had on culture, sports, media, and fashion.
“It’s the power of music itself. It’s a gift for guys that come from places that I came from, to be able to express themselves in a way that allows them the opportunity to alleviate some of those trials that we go through,” said The D.O.C. “And over these past 50 years, it’s allowed few of us the opportunity to really do some amazing things.”
“[Hip-Hop] was a lifestyle, that then turned into a movement, that then turned into an industry. So, it’s expression that’s now turned into a way for people to relieve what they were initially crying out against, which was poverty and crime-ridden neighborhoods,” said Awino. “It speaks very true to community. It has now become a global community of people who share commonalities around the world.”
The Dallas Mavericks will host a live screening of this HUDDLE session at the Dallas Museum of Art. Following the screening, Dallas Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Executive Director Jerry Hawkins will speak with The D.O.C. about the influence of Dallas artists within the national and international hip-hop community.
WHEN: Tomorrow, Nov. 18 | 2:30 – 4 p.m.
WHERE: Dallas Museum of Art | Horchow Auditorium
