The category of designer upcycled bags—silhouettes that meet at the crossover between style and sustainability—just expanded with the collaboration between Comme des Garçons and FREITAG. The two contemporary fashion brands recently launched a limited-edition collection of upcycled bags designed by Rei Kawakubo and produced in Japan.
Rei Kawakubo drew inspiration from FREITAG’s values, creating a unique collection using used truck tarpaulins. Both brands share a non-conformist design approach and a rich heritage. FREITAG, rooted in circularity, plans to introduce the first circular truck tarpaulin and a fully recyclable backpack in spring 2024.
The launch of the designer upcycled bags included in-store pop-ups at selected Comme des Garçons and Dover Street Market stores, showcasing Rei Kawakubo’s designs and insights into FREITAG’s history.
