Eve has shared in her memoir, “Who’s That Girl”, that she initially expected to resent Nicki Minaj when they worked together in the film “Barbershop: The Next Cut” in 2016. However, her experience on set led her to “earn respect” for the rapper.
Eve explained that she had previously experienced insecurities from other women projecting their own issues onto her. Determined to avoid this, she prepared herself mentally and physically to interact with Minaj. To her surprise, they got along well on set.
Eve observed Minaj’s unwavering dedication to her craft. She witnessed Minaj writing songs on her bus, rushing to fulfill show dates, and returning to shoot for hours on end. Seeing Minaj’s relentless work ethic and personal struggles, Eve’s envy dissipated.
“Instead of feeling insecure around Nicki, I started to sympathize with her,” Eve writes. She recognized the pressures and expectations faced by Minaj and recalled her own experiences as a woman in the spotlight.
Eve’s memoir also reveals that she later criticized Minaj’s controversial Paper magazine cover, saying that it sent the wrong message to young girls. However, she emphasized that she respected Minaj’s artistic expression and still held her in high esteem.
