Rwnowned Ghanaian female rapper Eno Barony believes women in the rap scene have to work exceedingly hard to gain recognition compared to their male counterparts.
In an interview on Accra-based Asaase Radio, the serial hitmaker called for more backing of female acts in the country’s entertainment industry.
Eno Barony, known for her lyrical dexterity and wordplay, stressed that gender biases pose a major challenge to the success of women in hip hop.
The musician argued that female talents have to prove themselves repeatedly before getting opportunities.
This, she said causes some to lose hope and leave the genre dominated by men.
While affirming her place among Africa’s best rappers, the award-winning artiste called for changing the narrative to boost support for women in music.
She believes Ghanaian fans and stakeholders must appreciate female acts based on ability rather than prejudging them.
This will encourage more girls to pursue careers in rap.
“When you are female and you find yourself in the midst of men, you have to work like a 1000 times harder to be seen. As a female, people doubt your talent, so you have to work hard, but some individuals give up along the way,” she noted.
