I’m a fashion editor who normally hates trainers but I’m buying all of these

Any fashion editor worth their salt will tell you that the best trainers can absolutely make an outfit – and I have to reluctantly agree, despite my notorious aversion to them.

It certainly helps that some of my favourite designers like Bottega and Loewe have just launched sleek styles for spring/summer 24. Other cult sneaker brands including Veja, adidas and Puma have added some fresh styles to their repertoire.

Watch out for the adidas SL 72, already lauded as the new Samba, and the Puma Palermo, as seen on Em Rata and Dua Lipa, in a dusty pink shade for spring that I’ve already got my eye on.

Having now invested in a few pairs, I’ve found they go with a surprising amount of what I own, from white jeans to occasionwear dresses.

Tempted? Here’s everything you need to know about which fashion trainers to invest in this season.

For spring/summer ’24, we’re seeing plenty of crotechet and embroidered trainers,a trend set by the sell-out Chloé Nama sneaker, launched as part of their SS22 collection and an instant hit thanks to its sustainable design (Katie Holmes can’t stop wearing hers).

Retro styles like Converse Chuck Taylors and the Nike Blazer sneakers are still going strong, and I’m loving New Balance’s T500, a unisex style inspired by the 80s.

Chunky trainers are still high on the agenda, with New Balance Unisex 530 still selling out on a regular basis. For something minimal, try a white trainer, seen everywhere on TikTok and at Fashion Week.

Of course, sustainability is at the forefront for SS24, and we’re seeing some great vegan options from the likes of Veja, Waes and Yatay – head to our sustainable trainers edit for even more styles – and for runners, do check out our best running shoes edit.
