The Calgary Central Library transformed into a vibrant hub of community spirit and rhythmic energy on Saturday, May 25. The Shaikh Family Welcome Gallery buzzed with the excitement of Afro-fusion dance, led by Calgary-born dance instructor, Amanda Okafor.
CBC Calgary’s Stories in Motion, in partnership with Calgary Public Library, welcomed everyone – from seasoned dancers to complete beginners – for a vibrant workshop.
Attendees were drawn in by the captivating sounds of Afrobeat music, and curiosity led visitors to the library (who weren’t registered), to join in on the fun. Everyone eagerly participated in the electrifying energy of Afro-fusion dance, including learning iconic moves like the Shaku Shaku and Gwara Gwara.
The library hall grooved to the infectious rhythms, and laughter filled the air as participants explored Azonto’s communicative steps and attempted the hip shakes of Tshwala Bam.
Amanda’s instruction was energetic, vibrant, and moving—a perfect representation of her love for African culture and a nod to her Nigerian roots. The class concluded with a routine that brought all the new moves together, culminating in a shared sense of achievement and camaraderie.
Age didn’t matter – from small children to adults – everyone participated with infectious enthusiasm. The workshop transcended a mere dance lesson, becoming a joyful celebration of community and cultural exchange.
