Between disco curls and the mob wife aesthetic, maximalism is clearly having a moment—and Jennifer Lopez is clearly taking note when it comes to her nail designs.
J.Lo’s go-to nail artist, celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik, shared a behind-the-scenes look at the nail look for Jennifer’s semi-autobiographical album and film This Is Me… Now. Dubbed a Latina mani by Tom, the mixed-medium style is autobiographical, nodding to J.Lo’s Puerto Rican heritage with Hispanic-Catholic symbolism.
“It’s all in the details,” Tom wrote in his caption revealing the manicure, and that it certainly is: The ornate design consists of classic Hispanic-Catholic iconography such as crosses, roses, rosaries, and the Virgin of the Sacred Heart overlaid on a medium-length squoval base.
But that’s not all: Each middle finger was complete with literal hoop piercings. Considering the look’s nickname, this could either be referencing the Hispanic-Catholic practice of piercing infants’ ears before they leave the hospital and the significance of hoop earrings in Latina culture—specifically that of Puerto Ricans (fellow Bronx native and Puerto Rican Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was sworn into Congress proudly wearing hoops).
If you’re feeling inspired, we have good news: Tom shared exactly how he created the look.
First, Tom prepped Jennifer Lopez’s nails with Tweezerman x Tom Bachik Ultimate Nail Care Set “for a meticulous mani.” Then he applied Apres Nail Gel X tips in Maisie and painted them using the brand’s gel colours in Vintage Carnation and Forgotten Film. These shades are only available in the US but a good alternative is the Manucurist Green Flash LED Gel Nail Lacquer in Pale Rose. Finally, Tom adorned her nails in maximalist Catholic nail art.
The mani fits right in with the resurgence in grunge goth glam. Plus, Megan Fox recently rocked bright pink cross nails courtesy of Nails of LA’s Brittany Boyce, and Kourtney Kardashian Barker’s goth-glam manis have embraced a similar theme.
