L.A. City Council celebrates 50 years of hip-hop

Hip-hop got some love at the Los Angeles City Hall Friday.

West Coast hip-hop icons were honored by the L.A. City Council. KNX News’ Craig Fiegener spoke to Damien “Big Percy” Roderick, who is one of those honorees and has been a big influence in hip hop for decades.

“Hip-hop is the arts. It’s the graffiti, it’s the dancing, it’s the fashion, it’s the clothes, it’s the food.” Percy said. “That’s what hip-hop is.”

Percy said it all started with DJ Kool Herc, who is also known as the founding father of hip-hop.

“He was doing a block party and started scratching and mixing and doing stuff at the block party,” Percy said. “And that’s how hip-hop was created.”

Percy is also Snoop Dogg’s longtime business manager. He’ll be honored by Councilwoman Heather Hutt.
