As returns to action go it’s been a mega-successful one, with Lauryn Hill selling out arenas from Toronto to Seattle to Los Angeles despite only having one 25-year-old album to tour on as a solo artist. Well aware that she’s been missed, and that the demand is there, the 48-year-old hip-hop icon has just added a spate of new dates to her The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary tour.
Vancouver is one of the lucky cities, as Hill will hit Rogers Arena on November 11. Co-headlining the night will be the Fugees, the group she was part of before becoming the most successful female hip-hop artist in history.
Not so much a record as an unstoppable pop-culture juggernaut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was a commercial and critical smash upon its release in 1998, topping both the charts and best of lists at the end of the year. Drawing from hip-hop, reggae, soul, and R&B, the record had Hill ruminating on womanhood, pregnancy, strife in the Fugees camp, the mysteries of love, and her relationship with God.
To date the album has sold 20,000,000 million copies worldwide, and achieved diamond status in the US, making Hill the first female rapper to reach that milestone. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has since been cited as game-changing inspiration by artists ranging from J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar to Rihanna and Adele.
In announcing the tour and its new dates, Hill said, “I’ve almost felt compelled to carry a torch or to keep a light shining regarding the continual performance of the Miseducation album. I believe there’s been a reason for that—and the Fugees coming back together for performances too feels like unfinished business we’re destined to handle. The connections are real and uncanny, and the magic and synergy between us has not been deterred by time.”
