*After a long pause since dropping music, MC Lyte has returned to the rap scene with “One Of One,” her first album in 10 years. Referencing the 53-year-old rapstress’ interview with K97.5’s DJ Remedy, Madame Noire reports the project was preceded by her new single, the Queen Latifah-assisted “King King.”

Before the June release of “King King” was the lead single, “Woman,” which arrived in March and features Lyte’s fellow rap icons Salt of Salt ‘N Pepa and Big Daddy Kane as well as R&B vocalist Raheem DeVaughn.

In addition to Latifah, Kane, Salt, and DeVaughn, “One Of One” includes an all-star roster of collaborators in the form of Common, Muni Long, Stevie Wonder, and Toni Braxton.

During her interview with DJ Remedy, Lyte touched on “King King,” as she went into the meaning of the tune she labeled as “”an ode to men who are “dedicated to their families” and loved ones.

“This is a time, right now, where everybody needs to know and be told that they are seen, that they are loved and that they’re appreciated — and that’s what the song is about,” the entertainer said of the new track.

As Lyte reintroduces herself, she is well aware of the new crop of feMc’s who are working to build a legacy as tight as hers. With her ventures beyond music, the two-time Grammy-nominated hip-hop fixture has made her mark as an actress and director.

Roles in “Girls Trip” and “Blue Crush” highlight Lyte’s resume as well as an executive producer credit in the 2023 Netflix documentary.”Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop.”

Despite the multiple roles, Lyte makes sure to stay in touch with new artists while keeping herself tuned in to the radio.

As for current rhymeslayers, the “Cha Cha Cha” rhymeslayer stated she has so much love and respect for many female rappers, including Tierra Whack, Rapsody, and Megan Thee Stallion. The Houston, TX rhymer is someone Lyte particularly praised, in light of her impressive performance skills on stage.

Although digital has taken over and shifted the process, Lyte stands by radio in her belief that the format is “ a vital part” of how communities of color get to know the “essence” of their city.
