Much-loved children’s book to be performed at Newbury theatre

The Baddies, a fresh take on the popular 2022 story by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, will be performed at Newbury’s Corn Exchange from Sunday, April 27 to Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

For fans of the original book, this adaptation promises to bring the same mix of humour and mischief to the stage.

The story follows three of the ‘worst baddies’ in the world—a witch, a troll, and an ancient ghost—as they attempt to frighten a young girl.

But they might find she is braver than they anticipated.

Directed and choreographed by Katie Beard, with music by Joe Stilgoe, The Baddies is set to be a hit with families.

The book has been adapted for the stage by David Greig and Jackie Crichton, ensuring the play stays true to the original story.

The cast for the tour includes James Stirling as Ghost, Lottie Mae O’Kill as Mama Mouse, Yuki Sutton as Girl, and Ben Simon as a swing.

Rosie Meek will play the Witch, Nic James will be the Troll, and Georgie McSherry will be a swing and dance captain.

The production also boasts a team of talented designers and directors, including Jasmine Swan for set and costume design, Simon Hayes for lighting design, and Carlotta De Gregori as fight director.

The puppetry will be handled by Edie Edmundsen, and the musical direction will be provided by Paul Herbert.

Freckle Productions, the company behind this adaptation, is known for creating imaginative stories for children.

They have previously brought other Julia Donaldson stories to the stage, including Stick Man, Tabby McTat, Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales, and Zog and the Flying Doctors.

Jennifer Sutherland from Freckle Productions said: “Freckle are thrilled at the response to The Baddies and are excited to be touring it around the UK in 2025.

“It has been amazing working with David Greig and Jackie Crichton to transport The Baddies onto the stage.”

David Greig, artistic director of The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, added: “The Lyceum is delighted to be working with Freckle Productions again, after the resounding success of Stick Man.

“We look forward to creating a whole new generation of theatre goers with this Julia Donaldson classic.”
