An old quote — with variations attributed to several leaders including the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcom X — goes like this: “11 a.m. Sunday is the most segregated hour in America.” What it means is that when both Black and white Americans gather for weekly worship, they do so largely in Christian congregations composed of just one race.
A close “second place” on the segregated-hour list might well be Friday afternoon at 3, and anytime Saturday morning, when Black, white and Asian Americans flock, respectively, to beauty shops and barbershops that are also mostly separated along racial lines.
