January is (finally) coming to an end, and we have a clear manicure trend taking the spotlight: Navy blue nails.
The marine hue was first popularized in the 18th century by the British Royal Navy and later made its way to the mainstream as the color of choice for the most elegant streetwear during the 19th century. Now, in 2025, navy blue is landing in our hands — our nails, to be more exact — as an alternative to the popular mocha brown manicures that boomed in the latter half of 2024.
And who can be credited for this new nail trend? Well, as usual, in a way, Hailey Bieber. The woman behind the glazed donut nail trend of 2022 was an early adopter of navy blue nails, showing off her set, which we think is a nod to her son Jack Blues Bieber, as early as September 2023 on her social media. After Bieber showed off her set, TikTok took notes, and navy blue nails of all shapes, sizes, and forms have been booming in popularity ever since

4 things to take into account when jumping on the navy blue nails trend:
- The shade: First things first, you gotta lock the shade. Opt for a very dark navy blue, almost bordering on midnight blue, or, if you want to spice it up, go for a more blueberry-esque hue.
- The finish: From semi-matte to shiny to chrome or mirror effect, navy blue nails work well with them all. Regardless of what finish tickles your fancy, the aim is to look flawless, very luxurious and with well-defined contours, so apply several coats so there is no lack of color power.
- The shape and the length: Although we have seen this blue in all kinds of lengths and shapes, it is true that long nails win the game when it comes to this trend. Being so dark, the length brings more drama and theatricality to the equation, so the hue’s powers and magnetism are multiplied. As for the shape, there are two safe bets: almond and the stiletto.
- The details: You might think of navy blue as a sober and even boring shade, but, friend, you’ve been proven wrong. There are many alternatives that show its versatility — you can play around with a blue-tip French manicure, with a layer of glittery top coat, and even with white bows adorning a nail on each hand. As you can see, navy blue nails can be more playful than you thought!
