A New York City Correction captain was caught on camera pistol whipping a woman during a brawl Sunday outside a White Plains bar and has been suspended a month without pay, the Daily News has learned.
Tony Montague, who made $237,000 in 2022, was charged with assault and other counts after the brawl about 6 p.m. outside the Brazen Fox Pub in the Waller Municipal Parking lot off of Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains.
Montague traded punches with a man in a white tank-top as house music and crowd noise is heard in the background, one clip obtained by The News shows.
Someone yelled, “World Star!” — evidently a reference to a website that often posts fight and hip-hop videos.
A woman ran up to defend the man in the tank-top. Montague punched her twice with the gun while yanking on her hair, the video shows.
The woman kicked at Montague and tried to punch him. Montague appeared to drop his weapon, but then retrieved it.
The video later shows an off-duty Yonkers police officer and an off-duty Westchester County police officer sweeping in with guns drawn to break up the fight.
Montague immediately dropped his weapon and put his hands up. White Plains police responded and took Montague into custody.
“A male, later identified as Tony Montague, struck a female with a licensed lawfully possessed handgun,” the White Plains police said in a statement issued Tuesday afternoon.
“Two off duty police officers who observed the altercation, drew their weapons and ordered Mr. Montague to drop his weapon. Uniformed officers responded and recovered the handgun and all parties were detained.”
Montague has been with the Correction Department since at least 2008 and has worked at the Vernon C. Bain Center, a jail located on a barge moored in the South Bronx. In September, Correction Department officials said they planned to close the barge this month.
Correction Department spokesman Frank Dwyer confirmed Montague’s imminent suspension Tuesday.
Montague was arraigned on Tuesday in White Plains City Court on charges of assault and possession of a loaded firearm. Both counts are felonies, court records show. The case was adjourned pending a hearing in early November.
Montague’s union president, Patrick Ferraiuolo of the Correction Captains Association, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A lawyer representing Montague could not be reached for comment.
The White Plains police posted a request on Facebook for the public’s help in providing witness accounts and video of the brawl.
