Of the many nail trends we’ve seen recently, two have proved to have staying power: ombre and chrome effects. Each has amassed a following and has been used to give classic manicures an edgy upgrade. With that in mind, it’s not hard to see why a blended look, aptly dubbed ombré chrome nails, has taken off. A combination of color gradients and metallic elements, they have become one of the most artistic styles online. Let’s get a closer look, shall we?

What are ombré chrome nails?

Given that this trend is a blend of two unique styles, it’s helpful to know the elements that define them both. “Ombré refers to a gradient effect that seamlessly transitions from one polish color to another,” says Thea Green, manicurist and founder of Nails.INC and INC.Redible Cosmetics. The blending method has become a popular way to put a fresh spin on French tips and solid-colored manicures. Green explains that the latest trend involves creating the same gradient with metallic-colored polishes for a unique look.

Metallics add edge to any manicure, but you can amplify the style using the chrome polish technique. “The effect is achieved by applying a chrome powder over the ombré gradient to give it a mirror-like appearance,” says Mazz Hanna, CEO of Nailing Hollywood. She explains that the final look often results in an ombré chrome that gradually gets darker at the tip of the nail.

How to do ombré chrome nails

While you can opt for traditional nail polish formulas, Hanna recommends using a gel-based polish and chrome powder instead. Gel polish will last a lot longer and impart more shine, while chrome powder will ensure that your final look is smooth and sleek. She also notes that finding a technician experienced in creating the look goes a long way. “Ombré alone is one of the more difficult nail art looks to achieve, so it’s best to go to a professional,” she says.

However, if you do decide to go the DIY route, there are plenty of kits available to help you nail the look. “It’s not easy, but it’s also not impossible to achieve at home. If you’re just beginning, try starting with soft nude shades and blending in lighter colors,” says Green. The key is to create a smooth and seamless transition between the shades. “Avoiding any harsh lines where one color ends and another begins is essential, she adds.
