Palm Beach Locals: Suebelle Is Here to Judge Your #OOTD. Will Your Pastels Pass the Test?

Think of Suebelle as that stylish aunt that you want, no, need to impress. She wears her bleach-blonde hair big and sports a crisp white shirt to the grocery store. You’re somehow always underdressed next to her. That signature smoky eyeshadow is just a gateway to those discerning, cruel eyes that she uses to scan the sartorial choices of all those who come across her. You’re a little scared of her yet you desperately yearn to feel the warmth and comfort from the moment she says “You look nice today.”

Hailing from Palm Beach, Suebelle has garnered just over 60,0000 followers on Instagram who tune into her daily videos expecting a good belly laugh. Remember those days of Tyra Banks onAmerica’s Next Top Model? Those where Banks and her panel of judges throw searing critiques at the contestants before them. That’s essentially what Suebelle does, taking voluntarily submitted images and offering her two cents on the outfits of the subjects in them. One picture, for example, features a young gentleman standing in front of the Louvre in Paris with a brown jacket on their shoulders. “I don’t know what you’ve got around your waist. Is that a holster?” Suebelle starts. “If there’s a pistol in there, you might want to shoot your barber. That’s the worst haircut I’ve ever seen.” Harsh? Totally. But the delivery is, as described, like that of a relative, making it sort of… intoxicating to watch?

Another features a couple standing in front of the betting lines of a horse race. “What a darling couple.. did you win some money? If you did, your husband might want to rethink that shirt. It’s tight around the arms, but he looks darling!”

In a world wear fashion criticism seems to run thin, it’s almost a refreshing to hear highly-opinionated takes from someone such as Suebelle. At the cusp of Palm Beach season, when those in the Northeast begin their travels down south, Suebelle chats with Town & Country, sharing fashion tips and how she became the queen fashion critic of Palm Beach.

Why do you think people should care about what they wear? And do they find it offensive or funny?

People remember 25% of what you say and 75% of how you look. Keep that in mind! Many find me offensive and funny, but I think people who are too sensitive shouldn’t be on Instagram.

How did your Instagram start, and why go around judging other people’s looks?

Earlier this year, I went viral on @classofpalmbeach in a video of me showing my outfit. From there I met two fabulous women who said, “We’re gonna make you a star!” I’ve been working with them and having a grand time. They suggested we film ‘critiques’, since I help my friends with their outfits already. I am blown away by the response to my Instagram. It’s beyond my wildest dreams!

What do you find unique about Palm Beach fashion?

It’s old money, preppy, and colorful. The island is covered in pinks and greens, from the outfits to the houses and hotels. You’re encouraged to wear white year round; you’ll rarely see someone wearing all black. Everybody is in silks and chiffons, it’s very upscale and elegant. You’ll see the most fabulous jewelry here, too. It’s unlike anywhere else.

How long have you been in Palm Beach?

I first visited Palm Beach at 23 years old with my boyfriend, a Kennedy-esque state representative. I loved the way he dressed. We went to the Colony Hotel for drinks, and I remember thinking, “Everybody here is so attractive!” I told myself that someday, I’d live here. I’ve now been here seasonally for 20 years. It’s a dream come true.

What are some fashion no’s for women?

Take out your driver’s license and see how old you are. Please, dress age-appropriate! Know your size, know what’s flattering, and don’t show too much skin.

What are some fashion no’s for men?

Bad haircuts! If you’re gonna color your hair (which is cool), don’t get it too dark. I prefer clean shaven—you really shouldn’t cover up a pretty face. I’ve noticed no men wear black shoes anymore, and never let your pants get so long they bunch up at the bottom.

Do you like bright colors?

I love bright colors. Orange, hot pink, lime green, they’re all great. Maybe not head to toe, but you can get that punch of color with purses, belts, or cardigan sweaters. Everybody needs a little color.

Where do people dress the best in Palm Beach?

Palm Beach is known for its member’s clubs, so of course people look fabulous there. Theylook great on Worth Avenue and at the churches and temples. The restaurant Sant Ambreous issome of the best people watching on the island. Everybody ups their game for Palm Beach.

And the worst?

That’s tricky. There’s a place where all the guys go for breakfast called Green’s Pharmacy. They get a little sloppy there, like they haven’t gotten ready for the day. We have a bike trail where people jog, and some people should rethink those outfits to be more flattering. But on the whole, it’s a very upscale place. People here care about how they look, which is why it’s so wonderful here.

Are you a fan of men wearing shorts past their knees?

That would be an absolute no, I think they’re sort of dopey looking. Men’s shorts should just graze the thigh.

What about wearing all black in Palm Beach?

I think it’s a terrible idea unless you have a great funeral to go to. There’s no reason to wear all black here!

Where is the best place to shop in Palm Beach?

Oh, we’re so blessed. I have three great places I like to mention: one is Worth Avenue, ofcourse. The second is Royal Poinciana Plaza, which is hopping and has great stores. Third, youcan find wonderful shops along South County Rd. As I said, we’re blessed.
