Pirate Booty (Captaintreacherous) swashbuckled her way to an open-length victory in her seasonal debut in the Fillies and Mares Preferred at Fraser Downs on Friday (Feb. 15).
The mare, sent off favourite for trainer/driver Terry Kaufman, legged out the opening quarter on the rim and made the top at the first station in :28.1. She got a facile second split, reaching the half in :57.3, and raised the pace to three-quarters in 1:25.2 despite no challenges. Pocket-tripper Grey Sea (John Abbott) held onto the leader’s draft into the stretch, but Pirate Booty pulled away to win by three-and-a-half lengths in 1:54.2. Grey Sea held off Gin Is Better (Clinton Warrington) to take second.
