It’s almost the end of 2023 and we have witnessed so many trends. Each comes with its aesthetic and ushers in a new era. Some of these fashion trends were past trends making a comeback and others that are solely fresh and new. But out of these trends, only a few shook the fashion world and have lasted throughout 2023. It is only right that as we approach the end of 2023, we show you fashion trends that dominated and were on our faces both online and offline.
Patchwork Denim Jeans
In the very beginning, patchwork was created out of need. People would patch their torn jeans up with fabric from other jeans or other kinds of materials. The patchwork jeans made a glorious re-emergence into the fashion world this year not as need due to poverty but as a need due to style. Patchwork jeans are either new jeans that are made in style straight from the factory. Many celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Jennifer Lopez have hopped on the patchwork bandwagon.
Barbiecore
This fashion trend is just one word – PINK 2023! It certainly was a pink-tastic year. And we have Greta Gerwig to thank for this. Directing the movie that shaped a lot of 2023 Barbie starring Margot Robbie. If you are a Barbie fan or it was a part of your childhood, 2023 would certainly have been a fun year for you fashion-wise, as so many people from celebrities, Influencers and everyone painted the world hot pink.
In the Barbiecore aesthetic, you must cover yourself from head to toe in hot pink. It is really that simple. Brands like Valentino got the theme as they had released an entire hot pink collection. You can name any celebrity and chances are they certainly stepped out in hot in pink this 2023. Some of the popular celebrities are of course Margot Robbie who gave us hot pink back-to-back for her media rounds for the Barbie movie. Others were Anne Hathaway, Florence Pugh and Gigi Hadid.
Skims Dress and It’s Dupe
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian’s fashion line Skims had released one of their dresses that brought TikTok to its knees. Every single Influencer big or small and regular TikTok users were adding Skims dresses to their cart begging her to take their money. However, there was a slight problem, the viral Skims dress was a little on the high side.
Gladly, that was not an issue for long as other affordable brands wasted no time in rolling out Skims dupe dresses. Everyone could afford to get the hottest dress for the summer. Brands like ASOS, Amazon, Zara, etc… each had a Skims dress dupe that women could not get enough of. For some people, none of the dupe dresses could ever replace the original. Some people may beg to differ but to each one their own.
Streetwear
Before diving into how streetwear brands made a fortune this 2023, let’s clarify that streetwear is different from street style. Streetwear fashion is defined by oversized clothing, graphic tees and chunky boots. Of course, there is more but these three sum up everything. Brands like Off White, Balenciaga, and Supreme championed the street wear movement because they had a vast collection of graphic tees and oversized clothing. Although the streetwear fashion trend almost mirrored 90s male fashion. It has a more futuristic twist to it. This is probably because a lot of streetwear brands have also delved into Tech wear.
Crossbody bags, statement belts and bucket hats are the go-to accessories for streetwear fashion. Unlike other fashion trends discussed so far, streetwear fashion is purely a Gen Z moment. It was not brought about by any celebrity or movie but by Gen Z fashion stars finding a way to express themselves with fashion. Not to mention it is one of the most comfortable ways to look stylish.
Y2K
Y2K fashion took 2023 by storm. It would be safe to say it was expected as so many past fashion trends have been making a glorious comeback all year. The return of Y2K fashion was very
much welcomed. It not only ushered in a new era of fashion but of a sweet, beautiful nostalgia. So far, it has been beautiful to see the streets of IG, TikTok and our homes graced with people in low-rise jeans, frill miniskirts, trousers under skirts, frill gowns, platform shoes and velvet tracksuits just to name a few. Y2K is a late 90s/early 2000s fashion. If you are looking to get on board this train, hip-hop music videos made in the early 2000s are a great place to begin. Do not forget that Y2K fashion goes past clothes and shoes, it also includes accessories and hairstyles.
In conclusion, it is evident that 2023 was certainly a fashion-forward year. I honestly cannot wait to see what the year 2024 holds.
