Resellers Make Case for Live Selling, ‘Loud’ Luxury: Short Takes

See Now, Buy Live: A livestreaming white space continues to open for vintage connoisseur Christos Garkinos. The veteran has spent the past 25 years in fashion and is now moving into new branded ventures. Dubbed “Covet by Christos,” Garkinos partnered with Fred Segal last month and saw a complete sell-through of all the featured items, which included a graffiti vintage Chanel backpack, a Louis Vuitton bear doll and Virgil Abloh period Louis Vuitton pieces from the “Found by Fred Segal” collection. Sales totaled nearly $100,000 in under two hours from the first show, according to Garkinos.

Instagram live show length varies depending on what Garkinos is selling. It can range from 30 minutes to 10 hours per show. “We go live daily and program 240 hours a month across all types of luxury categories,” said Garkinos. His newest category is beauty with Thirteen Lune and Sweet July, which recently launched, as one of his first partnerships in the space.

Ayesha Curry, founder of lifestyle brand Sweet July, said the partnership reels in a new audience after the brand’s July launch. “Our hope is to be able to connect with customers based in many different places, share with them the inspiration behind the line, how to use these first products and answer any questions in a more intimate way,” Curry told WWD.

Resale Moves: Fashionphile released its 2023 resale report Wednesday, detailing ongoing trends of both quiet and “loud” luxury (think ostentatious brooches), as well as vibrant handbag hues and “It” jewelry.

Data is based on searches at Fashionphile from January to May this year compared to the same period in 2022. As with reports from resale platforms like The RealReal, searches for quiet luxury bags — brands like Bottega Veneta, Celine and Loewe — are on the rise at Fashionphile. Trending bags like the Loewe Puzzle bag are also in the mix.

Numbers don’t lie as far as trending tones. At Fashionphile, searches for “magenta” have enjoyed a remarkable surge, with a staggering 243 percent increase in the first half of 2023 as compared to the end of 2022. From blue (up 220 percent), red (up 160 percent) to metallic (up 139 percent), colorful handbags are on the rise.

Perhaps in line with the economic downturn, 60 percent of Fashionphile customers reported purchasing at least one discounted item in the past year. Unsurprisingly, deals are a draw for every generation.
