Rihanna is defying all the trends for spring nail colours

We already knew Rihanna wasn’t one for following the rules, but her latest mani follows its own rules. When we asked nail pros to share their top spring nail colour trends, they all mentioned colour – but not your typical bright pinks and purples. Instead, they were all about strawberry reds, butter yellows, and earthy greens. But if Rihanna’s mani is any indication, we better make room for the classic milky manicure on that list too.

For her latest FENTY X PUMA shoot in Barbados, Rihanna let her outfit and accessories do the colour heavy lifting and stuck to her go-to neutral nails instead. In the images, which you can see on her Instagram, she relaxes on a boat wearing her footwear brand’s lemon-lime Cat Cleat Jelly sandals with a white pedicure. (Actually, the shoe colour is perfectly on-trend for nails too.) On her fingers, she wears a sheer, barely there milky pink colour, with her nails shaped into a soft square by manicurist Kimmie Keyes. (Rihanna previously let slip that square is her preferred nail shape).

Rihanna may not be dabbling in spring’s biggest nail colour trends (yet), but that doesn’t mean she skipped colour entirely in her boat-day glam. Makeup artist Priscilla Ono painted on the perfect bright red lip, probably Fenty Beauty’s now-legendary Stunna Lip Paint or Icon Velvet Liquid Lipstick. “Face card one in a billion,” Priscilla wrote, and truer words have never been spoken.

If you typically prefer a more neutral manicure, you’re in very good (and very famous) company. Rihanna often wears similar shades, like a chrome-dipped French manicure that was equal parts timeless and futuristic. Hailey Bieber has been feeling naked nails lately, even skipping her signature chrome finish in favour of a micro-French tip at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty. Selena Gomez also went for a naked nail at the Oscars, matching her mani to her dress. Nail colour trends come and go, but a milk bath manicure is forever!
