Education is often hailed as the gateway to a brighter future, but it’s important to recognise that not every promising future is tied to academic achievement.
Individuals possess diverse talents and strengths—some may excel in singing, dancing, or sports, even if they struggle with traditional studies.
In a country like India, and many others, there is a predominant emphasis on academic education, often overshadowing other forms of talent and potential. Yet, every so often, extraordinary stories emerge that challenge this conventional view.
They remind us that even in the face of adversity or when doubted by others, a lack of formal qualifications does not spell the end of the road. These stories highlight that success can come from various paths.
One such success story is that of 29-year-old Jenny Nguyen.
Jenn Nguyen, a renowned nail artist and the proud owner of JennPaintt Nail Lounge in Los Angeles, has carved a unique niche in the world of beauty.
At her chic salon, Nguyen offers an array of services, from manicures to eyelash extensions, but it’s her nail art that truly captures attention.
Utilising a blend of gel paints, polishes, gemstones, and stickers, she crafts mesmerising designs—whether it’s an intricate cloudscape or a vibrant spring flowers or even a bunch of fruits!
These masterpieces typically dazzle for two to three weeks.
Nguyen’s talent has attracted a roster of high-profile clients, including Paris Hilton and Hailey Bieber.
Yet, her salon is open to everyone, and her innovative designs have graced ad campaigns for big names like Apple, Converse, and Chanel.
According to tax documents uncovered by CNBC Make It, Nguyen’s salon earned over $600,000 in 2022.
Her journey to fame, however, began far from the glamorous world of nails. Nguyen initially pursued a degree in education at Hofstra University in New York. However, she left college during her junior year to support her parents and three younger siblings financially.
In 2019, Nguyen relocated to Los Angeles with plans to continue her teaching career. But as she reflects, “I wasn’t making enough money teaching.”
Faced with the challenge of finding a new direction, Nguyen turned to entrepreneurship—a field that aligned with her competitive spirit and desire for independence.
In early 2021, Nguyen took a leap of faith by obtaining her manicurist license online through Advance Beauty College, investing around $9,000 in the program. She began promoting her services on Instagram, offering free nail art to photographers in exchange for exposure. Her distinctive designs quickly caught the eye of social media influencers and celebrities, propelling her to fame.
By January 2022, Nguyen had opened the doors to JennPaintt Nail Lounge in downtown Los Angeles.
Since then, there’s been no looking back.
