One of the greatest rappers of all time graced a Toronto stage last week, and apparently many fans didn’t have a great time.
Lauryn Hill, accompanied by Hip Hop group the Fugees, performed at the Scotiabank Arena last Thursday night and put on a show worth remembering, but some say not for the right reasons.
“That had to have been the weirdest concert I’ve ever been to. I don’t know how to explain what that show was,” TikTok user Tandon (@tandon_rebecca) said.
“I obviously had high expectations because I love Miss Lauryn Hill. I’ve heard crazy things about her shows and to keep your expectations low and I see why and I suggest to anyone who sees her [to] keep your expectations low,” she continued.
Tandon also shared that there were obvious technical issues and noted that one member of the Fugees apparently got held up at the border.
Another user even said Hill was over 45 minutes late, an issue Hill is notoriously known for due to her tardiness at previous concerts.
Regardless, the love is real because Tandon says Hill is her favourite female rapper and that her album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” will always be one of her favourite albums.
“Was there too. It was chaotic but I knew what it was going in and decided to have fun regardless lol,” one user said.
“I would love her on her worst day,” another said.
However, other users weren’t so forgiving.
“Lauryn Hill is the only concert I’ve ever walked out of,” one user shared.
“Should’ve gone to Victoria Monet!,” another chimed in, referring to singer-songwriter Victoria Monét’s concert at History on the same night.
Many also took jabs at Hill for allegedly butchering some of their favourite songs, which many came to her defence claiming that the icon doesn’t own the rights to her music, therefore has to change it up in order to tour and perform them and avoid legal trouble.
The Toronto Star even reported that she had to rearrange and remix every song on her set list to not interfere with music rights.
