South American gangs stalk LA mansions in search of Birkin bags

Organised gangs of thieves are prowling some of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in Los Angeles to steal Birkin handbags that can be quickly sold on the black market.

The leather Hermès totes, beloved by celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez, are some of the most sought-after items in fashion. They can cost tens of thousands — sometimes hundreds of thousands — of dollars, and the French luxury brand was recently sued in California by customers alleging they were barred from buying one.

Their high price has made the bags coveted by thieves; now, gangs from South America are targeting mansions across LA. The Birkins are then resold online, police say.
