Tybee Island Pirate Festival returns. Where and when you can celebrate

Pirates will say “Land-Ho!” tonight, at least people dressed up as pirates. The Tybee Island Pirate Festival returns for its nineteenth year on Thursday night and it is set to run through Saturday. Those from our area and further will travel to the South Beach of Tybee Island to enjoy the “booty,” in the form of local restaurants, musicians and activities.Officials on Tybee say that more than fifteen thousand people attended the festival last year. However, with the buzz they’ve seen on social media and around town, they expect double the attendance this year and are taking all the precautions they deem necessary for safety. “We just really want to emphasize the importance of pedestrian safety because there will be a lot of pirates out walking on the streets,” Cassidi Kendrick, Main Street Director for the City of Tybee, said. “We want to make sure everybody is able to have a fun, safe time and just really watch for pedestrians when you’re driving around that area.”The kick-off event is at The Crab Shack, just off of Estill Hammock Rd., beginning at 6 p.m. This is the only ticketed event throughout the three-day festival, and tickets are only available at The Crab Shack afternoon leading up to the event. The fun does not end on Thursday, as the festival continues through Friday and Saturday with local vendors providing food and beverage, and eight different local musicians will provide entertainment.Friday’s festivities begin at 5 p.m. and continue through 11 p.m. featuring a bouncy house, face painting and music. Saturday hosts a larger window of events, beginning the day at 11 a.m. through 11 p.m. with much of the same as Friday, but with some variation. The crowd-favorite pirate parade will begin at 3 p.m. and will leave from 6th St. on Saturday.”Get there early, find a good parking spot and come out in your best pirate garb and really just enjoy the day,” said Kendrick. “There’s no reason that people can’t come out and have a good time and support the local community.” For a whole list of events this weekend, follow this link to the Tybee Island Pirate Festival website.
