Popular female-focused competition returns to create hip-hop girl group

“Unpretty Rapstar,” South Korea’s first female TV rap competition, is set to return to airwaves after a nine-year hiatus.
The original series, which aired for three seasons until 2016, gained widespread popularity for spotlighting female talent in Korea’s hip-hop scene. The show gave rise to notable Korean female rappers including Jeon So-yeon, Cheetah and Jessi.
Unlike its predecessor, which centered on discovering individual rap talent, the upcoming program will aim to form a hip-hop girl group. Contestants will be expected to take part in all aspects of production, including writing lyrics, composing music and choreographing performances, while completing a series of creative missions.
“Discovering hidden gems and following their growth into artists through self-producing missions will be a key highlight of the new season,” CJ ENM said in a press release.
The show is being positioned as a global project. Applications are open to aspiring female artists of all nationalities born before Jan. 1, 2012. Applications will be accepted through June 30, with submissions available via a QR code included in the recruitment teaser on Mnet TV’s YouTube channel.
Starting April 30, applications will also be accepted through the Mnet Plus platform.
“Unpretty Rapstar: Hip Pop Princess” is scheduled to premiere in October.
