NOLUNTU J, a formidable force in Bulawayo’s rap scene, has announced her intention to collaborate with numerous artistes this year. This revelation was made at the #ForTheCity women’s edition gig at Stop Over Bar and Restaurant, where she graced the stage as a guest artiste.

Revered as “Ndlunkulu,” a title of significant honour, the Winning hit-maker has been an ambassador for Bulawayo’s hip-hop scene, representing the city at award ceremonies and festivals nationwide.

Noluntu J expressed her desire to broaden her discography through several collaborations.

“I have been impressed by the level of talent that I saw here. This is a clear sign that we are moving in the right direction as the Bulawayo female rap sector. It is my wish to work with the talent in Bulawayo but only if it’s the right fit for me.

“There are a couple of female emcees that I have been watching closely lately. One of those is Swazy since her “Friday Late” performances at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. She is really pushing and needs to be celebrated. I only have two collaborations in Bulawayo and we are set to change that soon,” she said.

Noluntu J made a significant impact when she spotlighted male rapper, Chuck The Lunatic, with a masterfully crafted freestyle that left the audience intrigued. The rapper, who has been a hot commodity over the past year, has pushed the boundaries of the game, even challenging male rappers.

She has collaborated with Zhezhingtonz for Hero and is looking to add more. The 2023 Zim Hip-hop Awards Best Live Act winner, and Best Female nominee also showcased her talent at the recently-held National Arts Merit Awards (Nama) at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre (ZIEC).

The line-up of female rappers included TBK, Sasha, Au Fait, Cleopatra Beez and DJ Ndoe, with Chichie The Poetic Queen serving as the guest director of events. These women gave their all and the crowd’s response was so enthusiastic that it was hard to believe it was, for some, their first time performing in front of an audience.

What would a female hip-hop gig be without some Lisa K Chidz effect? The controversial figure was handed the microphone to freestyle and she did not disappoint.

Notable figures in the crowd supporting the movement included Mzoe7, Imicimbi kaFofo, Thorne Laroq. Mitchell “Michy Zee” Banda, one of the event’s organisers, was both shocked and thrilled at how the event unfolded.

“We should do more of this (such events) hey! I have been overly impressed with the turnout and the performances as well. It shows that Bulawayo’s female rap emcees are ready to step up to the plate and it was also good to see male rappers turning up to support. The movement is growing,” she said.
