The Illuminate are the latest foe to appear in Helldivers 2, but they’ve been missing for some time now. Where on (Super) Earth are they?
Helldivers 2 kicked some serious ass with its Omens of Tyranny update, delivering unto the great freedom fighters of Super Earth their biggest challenge yet – a planet infested by the fearsome returning Illuminate, and their Voteless minions hellbent on dismantling managed democracy across the universe. The update delivered a huge number of great features for players to get stuck into, featuring a new land vehicle and a fresh Killzone crossover. (The latter quickly went wrong for Arrowhead Game Studios, but the studio made up for it by offering players a fistful of free collaborative cosmetics). There have also been some major updates recently that have patched up in-game issues, fixing Raise the Flag objectives and resolving issues with the Plasma Punisher weapon, which are now contributing to major successes for the Helldivers across the galaxy.
What’s curious now, though, is that players might have been a little overzealous, as their attempt to crush the menace of the Illuminate has been a smidge too effective, and players are starting to wonder – where are the Illuminate in Helldivers 2? Here’s what we know about the Illuminate’s plans, and when we can expect them to return to the game.
Where are the Illuminate in Helldivers 2?
The planet Calypso, just below the planets overrun with Terminids on the Galactic map, was home to the first war between the Super Earth and the returning Illuminate in Helldivers 2, and it seems that players have done so well that they have completed their first Illuminate-themed objective, and wiped the planet clean of the Illuminate presence. For now, there are no missions to complete that concern the new alien foes.
Logging into the game after the success of the Helldivers reveals a Major Order Success notification that reads “The resurgent Illuminate have been repelled by the Helldivers. Order has been restored on Calypso.” It goes on to mention that small numbers of the foes have retreated and that small recons have been deployed to wipe them out after Super Earth has determined that this attack was committed by a small cell of forces eradicated in the first Galactic War. We’re not so sure they’ll stay gone for long, but where are the Illuminate in Helldivers 2 now?
It’s a compelling way to frame the first push from the Illuminate in Helldivers 2 for players, setting the stage for a massive resurgence of their numbers sometime down the line, but as new threads on Reddit are exposing, players are a little upset that they missed the first pass at taking them down, leaving players who missed out with little to do but kick rocks with the Automatons and Terminids. We’ve experienced major comebacks before, with players wiping out the Automaton menace across the galaxy on April 7, 2024 (via Twitter) before they returned only a few days later – but we’re now over two weeks since the Illuminate were stripped from the galaxy, with no word yet on their return.
Regardless, as we’ve seen with Super Earth authorities, maybe these presumptions of only a small force being present in the galaxy aren’t to be trusted, and a larger influx of the foes will appear later on. We can’t imagine it’ll be long before the Illuminate in Helldivers 2 make a big return, especially after over two weeks of waiting for more action from the alien enemies, so keep an eye on the game in the coming days for a few more planets with arriving Illuminate threats in tow. Prepare for war like you’ve never seen, Helldivers.
