White men hold most of the power on N.J. government boards. That has to change, report says.

New Jersey may be one of the most diverse states in the nation, but nearly 45% of the seats on its government boards and commissions are filled by white men, according to a first-of-its-kind report commissioned by lawmakers.

The study, called “From Data to Diversity,” said women and all racial minorities are underrepresented on hundreds of government-appointed boards and New Jersey needs to make major changes to fix the imbalance.

“The state of New Jersey falls woefully short in terms of gender and racial diversity among its appointed public officials,” according to the report released Wednesday by Rutgers University’s Center for American Women and Politics in partnership with the Center for Public Interest Polling.
