Woolies bargain Aussies are scrambling to get their hands on

I’ll confess, I am a bit of a cheapskate.

I’m also not into flashy brands to spruik either wealth or status, so I’ve never really understood the obsession with designer handbags that can set you back thousands of dollars. Functional and a bargain is more my bag.

I was intrigued, though, to learn that you can now pick up a designer bag for just $20 at your local supermarket.

Or at least you could, if you can find one.

Demand is through the roof for the coveted tote that is selling out fast, and being resold online for up to three times the original price.

So what is all this about?

British fashion darling Dame Anya Hindmarch is a favourite of superstars and royalty, which is fitting, because her luxury designer bags and accessories sell for a King’s ransom.

She is also at the forefront of sustainable fashion.

The designer helped kickstart the end of single use plastic bags at supermarkets with her famous ‘I’m not a plastic bag’ campaign in 2007, and her bags quickly sold out when she paired up with Sainsbury’s supermarkets in the UK in 2021.

Her £10 Universal bags are of higher quality than the reusable bags there were already on offer, and with the buzz around having the Anya Hindmarch name attached, were quickly picked up by other supermarket chains in the UK, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Now the 20th edition Universal bag, in Woolworth’s green, is being sold online and in select supermarkets around Australia.

Selling for $20, they’re a lot pricier than Woolworth’s existing reusable totes and foldable bags that range in price from 99 cents to $3.

The Anya Universal bag with its signature smile logo is, however, made to last a lot longer – 10 years.

It’s made from recycled materials and can be recycled itself, so fits the bill for a supermarket trying to reduce waste.

The Universal tote campaign claims to have stopped 230 tonnes of plastic going into landfill around the world.

Fans and fashionistas who love an Anya Hindmarch design are having to step up their game to bag one of the Universal bags – some resorting to visiting multiple Woolworth’s stores to find one still in stock, although they haven’t yet sold out from the store online. Not yet, at least.

So if, like me, functional and a bargain is what you seek in a bag, the Anya Universal tote could be the designer bag for you!
