100 Years Ago: 1923
One of the interesting novelties of the season, a fashion show displaying the latest and most impressive styles in women’s clothing will be held next Thursday and Friday evenings in the Empire Theatre.
The picture will be “Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife,” featuring Gloria Swanson-most stylishly dressed woman in the movies. She unques- tionably will show some very wonderful gowns; but they will be in no way finer, artistically, than those revealed in real life when the fashion show begins. The picture part of the program will start at the usual hour,6:45, and will continue until approximately 8:15.
Then the curtain will be lowered for a very short time, so that the stage may be tastefully decorated by the Atherton Furniture Company.
When the curtain is raised again, the fashion show will begin. Latest styles in women’s sport clothing. evening gowns and furs, from the Abbott Brothers’ Company, will be shown upon six beautiful models, all of whom are from Lewiston-Auburn. It will be one of the prettiest displays imaginable and one of the most instructive for those who wish to be in the latest fashion. When it ends, the regular picture program will be repeated; There are always two shows at night.
It goes without saying that The Empire will be crowded to its doors both Thursday and Friday.
50 Years Ago: 1973
(Sun-Journal photo) Officials have set Nov. 1 as the day when the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge will be opened to traffic in its entirety.
The section of Main Street, Lewiston, near the bridge ramps is pictured, with the uncompleted ramp at left. In about two months, new sets of traffic lights, and signs will have been added to the area, replacing the stately elm trees and homes which once lined the main thoroughfare. Part of the bridge was opened last October and construction work has continued uninterrupted since then.
25 Years Ago: 1998
Allison.L.Traynor, 12-year-old daughter of Timothy and Doreen Traynor, was among more than 550 students and music educators from across the country who attended the 16th annual Brightleaf Music Workshop, July 26 to Aug. 2 on the campus of Duke University.
She is a seventh-grade student at Lewiston Middle School. Brightleaf Music Workshop is a nonprofit summer choral music and performance clinic founded in 1983 in Durham, N.C. by a long- time public schools music educator, Lisa McIver. Brightleaf provides opportunities for music educators and students from fourth- graders through high school and college.
