Any true lover of hip hop will tell you that “the ladies will kick it, the rhyme that is wicked” when it comes to female rappers. From Queen Latifah and Roxanne Shante to Latto, women have certainly solidified their place in the male-dominated genre and made names for themselves in their own way. Honing their unique gifts and grit, these women have paved the way for others across the music landscape to show up as their most authentic selves.
Releasing Wednesday, August 9, Netflix is paying tribute to these trailblazers in Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop. The four-part docuseries explores the triumphs, challenges and contributions that women of all backgrounds have experienced in the lane of hip hop. As the world continues to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop’s inception, this series duly centers women at the forefront of this movement that altered the course of history.
Legendary artists such as Sha-Rock, Roxanne Shante, Rah Digga, Latto, Tierra Whack and more will make an appearance and share their stories through the lens of the docuseries.
Executive produced by Culture House, the series was produced Hannah Beachler with a team consisting of Nijhon and hampton, Troy Carter, Carri Twigg, Nicole Galovski, Jennifer Ryan, Justin Simien and MC Lyte.
