Celtics mark Black History Month with ‘all black everything’ and nod to 1990s hip-hop fashion

A dual night of celebration and loss, the Celtics uplift Black History Month with style and honor.

Happy Black History Month.

Celtics marked the occasion and kicked off the celebration at home against a newly built Mavericks team (minus one of its newest members), balling in Action Green on the parquet and styling in matching black-on-black in the tunnel, two favorites for the team.

In the latest set of “Ford Fits” to grace the runway, we saw father-and-son duo Jayson and Deuce Tatum in matching black. Dad wore a jacket with simple silver buttons over a basic white tee playing peekaboo underneath to create visual relief with his signature color-blocked touch.

Tatum completed the look with a kiss of bling, much like the kiss of snow that fell in Boston earlier today.

Sam Hauser and Derrick White joined in on the coordinated efforts, simple and understated in black Celtics branded sweatsuits.

To round out the remembrance, the team shared a commemorative post: “Built by black history, elevated by black voice,” the Instagram caption read and then repeated on the bench in white and green.

Celtics additionally reflected on its third HBCU Night, held at TD Garden on January 29.

Black is iconic. It is the powerful cloak frequently worn by Jaylen Brown and forms the basis of his 741 performance line.

Black is beautiful. The ultimate fashion mainstay offering versatility from simple to sophisticated, from street to runway, everyone has at least a little black in their closet. You can’t go wrong with black.

Black never goes out of style. It is a timeless go-to for many players on the team and generally across the NBA. But the Jays especially love wearing this rich neutral that carries so much meaning and significance.

Last time Tatum wore black, fans and followers were treated to a masterclass in the right way to wear all black. There was texture, there was shape, there was silhouette.

It was like Tatum reached into the past and pulled pieces from a 1990s closet on Blue Hill Avenue, and elevated the composition with a hint of Newbury Street.

Fast forward to Thursday night, the other Jay broke from the team’s style memo. Taking a beat from the full black, Brown paired slinky wide-legged slacks with a sweater fit for a jubilation. At a quick glance, it kind of looked like a disco ball.

On closer look, Brown’s top recalled another style artifact: the Coogi sweater, an elder relative to hip-hop streetwear most often associated with Biggie Smalls.

Team members joined in on the celebration of black: Kristaps Porzingis paired bright white kicks with a black tee and gold chain, recalling yet another 1990s fashion pairing, this time from the West Coast

Others sported black in creative applications, in small doses like Al Horford or in high contrast like Jordan Walsh.

The Celtics opened Black History Month in black — some keeping it classic, others adding their own spin. Whether subtle or statement-making, the looks spoke to a style that never fades and a culture that always leads, even through a disappointing loss to the Mavericks, 127-120.
